Questions, answered

Straight answers to the questions people ask us most, from preparation and underfloor heating to what we supply and how to get a quote.

What areas do you cover?

We are based in Carlow and fit floors and carpentry across Leinster, including Carlow, Kilkenny, Laois, Kildare, Wexford and Dublin. If you are just outside those counties, ask us anyway.

How do I get a quote?

Fill in the quote form on any page of this site, or call 085 143 3969. Tell us the rooms, the floor you are thinking about and a rough size. Quotes are free and there is no obligation.

Do you supply the flooring or only fit it?

Both. We supply laminate, engineered wood, solid wood, herringbone, LVT and SPC flooring and fit it. If you have already bought a floor, mention it when you ask for a quote.

What types of flooring do you fit?

Laminate, engineered wood, solid wood, herringbone and parquet, and vinyl (LVT and SPC). We also sand and restore timber floors, renovate staircases and do made-to-measure carpentry.

Do you take up and remove the old floor?

Yes. We lift the old flooring and take it away for disposal as part of the job.

Do you check and prepare the subfloor?

Yes. We assess the floor before every project and level and prepare the subfloor where needed. A flat, dry subfloor is what stops a new floor gapping, creaking or lifting later.

Do you check for damp?

We check the subfloor before fitting and install a moisture barrier where one is needed. Moisture is the most common reason wood floors move, so it is worth getting right before the floor goes down.

Can you fit flooring over underfloor heating?

Yes. Engineered wood, LVT, SPC and many laminate and herringbone products are suitable over underfloor heating, within limits set by the manufacturer. Tell us about your heating system and we will match the floor to it.

Do wood floors need to acclimatise before fitting?

Yes. Wood flooring should rest in the room it will be fitted in so it adjusts to the temperature and humidity. The manufacturer's instructions set how long.

What underlay do you use?

It depends on the floor and the room. We fit underlay under laminate and floating floors for comfort, and acoustic underlay where sound matters, such as apartments and upstairs rooms.

Do you trim doors and fit skirting?

Yes. We trim doors where the new floor sits higher than the old one, take off and refit skirting boards, and fit neat thresholds where two floors meet.

Do you move the furniture?

Yes. We move larger furniture as part of the job and put it back when the floor is finished. Please clear small items, ornaments and anything fragile first.

Do you work with builders, landlords and businesses?

Yes. We work for homeowners, landlords preparing lets, renovation contractors and interior designers, and we fit and restore floors in shops and offices as well as homes.

Are you insured?

Yes, Mila Flooring & Carpentry is fully insured.

Which floor is best for a kitchen?

LVT or SPC vinyl is the most practical, because the boards are waterproof and hard-wearing. Engineered wood and water-resistant laminate also work well in kitchens if spills are wiped up. Read our guide to choosing a floor for a side by side comparison.

Which floor is best for a bathroom?

Waterproof LVT or SPC vinyl, with the edges sealed. Wood and standard laminate are not suitable for bathrooms.

Which floor is best with pets?

LVT and SPC resist scratches and stains best and wipe clean easily. A laminate with a high wear rating is also a good choice. Soft wood finishes show claw marks more.

Can you match new flooring to what I already have?

In most cases, yes. We colour match new flooring, staircase treads and repairs to existing floors so the result looks like one continuous scheme.

Can an old wooden floor be restored instead of replaced?

Often, yes. Solid wood, parquet and original floorboards can be sanded, repaired, gap filled and refinished. Engineered wood can be sanded if its top layer is thick enough. Laminate and vinyl cannot.

Do you renovate staircases?

Yes. We fit new hardwood or laminate treads and risers, newel posts, handrails and spindles, and colour match the stairs to your new floor.

After getting stuck in a massive flooring pickle Leon came to the rescue at quite short notice too. Not only did Mila Flooring save the day, they did a phenomenal job installing flooring for our kitchen, hall, sitting room, under stairs and utility. We are unbelievably happy with the finish, it's gorgeous. Leon and his team were lovely, efficient and fantastic to work with.
