Questions

Solid Wood Flooring: your questions

Is solid wood the right floor for my home?

Solid wood is a good fit if you want a floor that can be renewed many times and you are fitting it in rooms with steady heat and humidity. In kitchens, basements, or over underfloor heating, engineered wood is often more stable. We will tell you honestly which suits the room.

Why does the subfloor matter so much?

Wood moves with moisture and needs a flat, dry base. A damp or uneven subfloor is the most common reason timber floors gap, cup or creak. We inspect and level the subfloor first and fit a moisture barrier where one is needed, so the finished floor stays flat and quiet.

Can solid wood go over underfloor heating?

Some solid boards can, within strict limits on board width, moisture content and surface temperature set by the manufacturer. Engineered wood is usually the more stable choice over heating. Tell us about your system and we will advise which boards are suitable.

Can an old solid floor be restored instead of replaced?

Often, yes. Solid floors can be sanded back to fresh timber, repaired, and refinished in a new stain, lacquer or oil. Restoration is usually far less disruptive than a new floor. See our floor sanding page for what is involved.

What wood do you use?

Oak is the most popular choice. We can supply other hardwoods and finishes; ask when you request a quote.

Does solid wood need to acclimatise?

Yes. Solid wood should rest in the room before fitting so it adjusts to the temperature and humidity. The manufacturer's instructions set how long.

Is solid wood noisy?

A well laid floor on a flat, properly prepared subfloor should be quiet. Acoustic underlay helps in apartments and upstairs rooms.
